CONGRATULATIONS TO THREE MANITOBA ATHLETES SELECTED TO THE NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT TEAM

Three Manitoba athletes were apart of the National Development Team as they faced their American counterparts in a 3-game series in London, Ont. Sean Gilmour, a returning player to the team, was joined by first comers Jonathon Derry and Cole Maydanuk.

The Americans won the series winnings 2-1(OT), 3-1, and 2-1(SO). Jonathon Derry got the start in the net for game two, but left in the third period with an injury.

Sledge Hockey Manitoba is proud of the accomplishments of these athletes, and wish them all the best in their pursuit to be on the national team.

MANITOBAN TO BE AMBASSADOR AT SOCHI PARALYMPIC GAMES

Sourced from Hockey Manitoba

Thirteen-year-old Spencer Lambert, who plays on the intermediate Manitoba Battling Bisons Sledge Hockey team, has been selected by Shriners Hospital for Children to attend the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia as an ambassador for parasports.

Spencer will visit various sports and teams at the Paralympic Games from March 6 – 11, including Canada’s National Sledge Hockey team, as part of a VIP tour offered by the Canadian Paralympic Committee. Spencer was chosen after the CPC gave four tour passes to the Air Canada Foundation, one of their corporate sponsors, who elected to give two tickets to a worthy young person with a disability.

The Air Canada Foundation approached the Shriners Hospital for Children in Montreal for a referral to a deserving candidate and Spencer’s name was put forward. Although he has had many visits to the Shriners Hospital in Montreal over the years, the courage he showed while undergoing a recent nine-hour operation there was a significant factor in their decision.

In addition to participating in sledge hockey, Spencer also plays wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. Based on all these merits, the Air Canada Foundation and the Shiners Hospital for Children felt Spencer would make a worthy ambassador for Paralympic sports and he was selected for the once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Spencer has been playing sledge hockey since 2008 and is one of Manitoba’s up-and-coming para-athletes, representing Manitoba in a variety of tournaments in Alberta and Manitoba. He hopes to one day represent Canada on its national sledge hockey team.
