SLEDGE HOCKEY CLINICS
Experiencing the game of ice hockey while using your arms is a great way to bring people of all abilities together on an equal level. School skating sessions never have to exclude students who cannot skate or have a disability; incorporating a sledge clinic or 2 provides everyone with a chance to participate. Sledge Hockey is a sport that provides new challenges, works on fine and gross motor skills, and is tons of fun. It is also a great alternative to recreational stand up skating.
We can bring sledges and sticks for a maximum of 20-24 participants; we also provide on ice instruction and guidance.
We have conducted a number of sledge hockey clinics over the years, reaching ten's of thousands of students and athletes, and look forward to offering our sport to new and existing groups.

FAQ's:
If our group size is more than 24, how can we accommodate?
We ask that the group be split into 2 sessions which can look like 30-45minutes per group and we will rotate students out of the sleds halfway through.
How long are sessions?
1-1.5 hours is needed to conduct these clinics. Typically children under 16 tire more quickly. An hour is the perfect length of time for all ages.
How much does it cost? the booking group is responsible for renting the ice (indoor), a $100.00 honorarium is required for the first hour and $25.00 for every additional hour. There is a $25 fee for bookings outside of Winnipeg city limits.
Further donations can be made to Manitoba Possible where tax receipts are issued for $20+
What age group do you deliver these to? Typically we offer this to anyone over the age of 7 years old due to the sizing of the sleds. If you have a student in K-2 that would benefit from adding a sledge to your skating program, please reach out as we do have a couple sleds on hand for loan that may fit.
What do the groups learn? we provide a basic introduction of the sport such as learning how to skate, slow down, turning, and puck handling by incorporating physical educational games on ice, and other practice techniques; this is followed by a short scrimmage game. Stand up hockey teams or academy's may want a brief intro (15 minutes) and head straight into a game for their players. This is something you can indicate during your request.
Do you book ice or do we? Groups making requests will be asked to book and pay for their own ice times. We take requests between September 1 - May 1st.
Do you conduct clinics at outdoor rinks?
We do not take requests for outdoor rinks.
Conditions any lower than -13 can make the experience unpleasant, and outdoor ice is not preferred for a number of reasons:
- Kids get colder much faster as you are closer to the ice, and then they stop trying/participating
- It is difficult to change out of, and buckle into sledges during cold weather as gloves need to be off
- Outdoor Ice is usually harder to skate on, making it more challenging for participants to learn
- weather is unpredictable
What type of equipment is needed? players will need a helmet (cage preferred) hockey gloves or strong mitts; elbow pads will make the experience more enjoyable but not necessary; old athletic/sweat pants is also recommended.
Where possible, other hockey equipment is encouraged such as shoulder pads, neck guard, elbow pads, and shin guards.
What do we wear on our feet?
A clean pair of indoor runners or boots.
Who leads the on ice sessions?
A variety of Manitoba Possible Recreation staff and Sledge athletes will lead the clinic. Typically there are 2-3 coaches/instructors present for each session, depending on staff availability.
If my student has limited upper body mobility can they still participate?
Yes! We have accommodations for a number of our sleds that include a high back rest, chest strap, or push bars, to adapt the sled for full and equal participation. We ask that groups have a stand up skater present to push the student(s) on ice.
How far will you travel? 1-3 hours outside of Winnipeg. Please contact us for anything further than 3 hours as we may be able to accommodate.
Is it safe? like all sports there is an element of risk; primarily with the picks that are attached at the bottom of the stick and players rough housing. However, we have served over thousands of people and have never had a serious accident; we take great pride in our safety record and do our best to ensure everyone is safe throughout the session.
Can we rent sledges without conducting a clinic through you?
Absolutely! Please reach out for rates and a rental process to borrow sleds and sticks. Transportation of equipment can be coordinated.
