GAME HIGHLIGTS:
GAME ONE: Manitoba Moose vs. Calgary Scorpions (Friday April 16, 2010)
Game one started out with a bang as Sean Gilmour fired a shot from the blue line right off the face off into the net for the first goal of the tournement at 5:09 in the first period. The goal was assisted by Sam Unrau who took the draw and by Casey Mennell who was playing left wing. This goal came shortly after the Calgary Scorpions recieved a 2 minute minor T-boning penalty at 7:14.
The Calgary Scorpions had many scoring chances but the Manitoba Moose Goalie Jon Derry made amazing save after amazing save to keep the game 1-0. Daniel Plantz was given a breakaway and shot the puck while in the zone however the Calgary goaltender was quicker than he was.
Tempers began to flare in the second period as both the Manitoba Moose and the Calgary Scorpions became more focused and determined in the second period. The Manitoba Moose were trying for another goal to seal their win while the Calgary Scorpions were trying to tie it up. Both the Manitoba Moose and the Calgary Scorpions received interference and roughing penalties. The Manitoba Moose penalties were 2 minutes for interference at 14:12 served by Josh Harder, 2 minutes for roughing at 10:16 served by James Bernus, 2 minutes for roughing at 1:22 served by Bill Muloin. The Calgary Scorpions penalties were 2 minutes for interference at 11:13, and 2 minutes for roughing at 4:24 left to play. While there were lots of penalties in the second period there were no power play goals by either team.
The third period started out quiet for the first 5 minutes until Jake Smellie received a 2 minute minor for roughing at 9:11, this gave the Calgary Scorpions the chance to tie up the game, but they could not compare to the defence and goaltending of the Manitoba Moose. The Manitoba Moose sealed the win at 4:23 when Sean Gilmour once again scored to bring the Moose to a 2-0 win over the Scorpions. This game winning goal was assisted by Sam Unrau and Darrin Luke.
During the first game against Calgary Scorpions Jon Derry faced 23 shots on goal, but didn't give up a single point.
Sean Gilmour was awarded the MVP for the first game of the tournement.
GAME TWO: Manitoba Moose vs. Battle River Icehawks (Saturday April 17, 2010)
Game two was the Manitoba Moose's main focus and challange of the tournement as they faced the Battle River Icehawks, who dropped down from the A divison this year.
The Manitoba Moose came in fighting right from the start scoring their first goal meer minutes into the game. The goal was scored by Jake Smellie at 12:36 assisted by Sam Unrau and Jonathon Barrera.
The second period started out shaky as Josh Harder got undressed by number 5 Brad Overeem who went top shelf on the Manitoba Moose goalie Jon Derry to score Battle Rivers goal at 13:16 assisted by Corey Nelaon. Shortly after the goal Battle River was called on a Too Many Men penalty at 12:55. This gave the Manitoba Moose a chance to retake the lead in the game, however the Battle River goalie was too quick and the Moose were unable to get the power play goal. Casey Mennell made a great pass to Daniel Plantz who took the puck to the net but didn't get the shot off in time before the goalie read the play and stopped the puck just short of the goal line.
There was no scoring in the third period and the Manitoba Moose received the only penalty of the period. Bill Muloin served a 2 minute minor for roughing at 7:19. The game would finish in a tie at 1-1, with the Manitoba Moose getting 27 shots on the Battle River goalie and Battle River getting off 25 shots against the Manitoba Moose goalie Jon Derry.
Jake Smellie was awarded the MVP for the first match up against Battle River.
Who could have asked for a better match up than that!
GAME THREE: Manitoba Moose vs. Red Deer Rage (Saturday April 17, 2010)
Red Deer Rage, who knew there could be such a rivalry in just one year.
In the 2009 Western Canadian Sledge Hockey Tournement the Red Deer Rage were the reason the Manitoba Moose recevied silver and not gold, therefore the Manitoba Moose were out for blood and revenge and boy did they get it!
The rough and tough game started out right from the first face off as the Manitoba Moose player Jake Smellie received a 2 minute minor for roughing at 14:12. Shortly after the penalty was over Jake redeemed himself as he assisted Sean Gilmour in scoring the first goal of the game at 11:44. There was much argument by Red Deer to say that the goal should not have been allowed because Jake came off the penalty early, however this was not so, the score keeper was new and was not able to post the penalty in time with the play. After discussion with the linesmen and the record keeper the goal was allowed and this tempered the Red Deer Rage more than they already were. Red Deer received 2 penalties in the first period, one for interference and one for roughing.
The second period was fast paced and high intensity with lots of hits and many scoring chances, however there was no scoring for either team and the only penalty was awarded to the Manitoba Moose player Jake Smellie, 2 minutes for roughing at 8:28.
The third period was do or die for the Red Deer Rage while the Manitoba Moose fought to get the win and regain their place on top over Red Deer and erase the pain from the year before. The third period was action packed as there were 4 penalties for Red Deer and one for the Manitoba Moose. The tension was high between Jake Smellie and Red Deer's number 5 Cody Bedu, who were at eachother all game long chirpping and getting under eachother's skin. The Manitoba Moose scored their second of the game at 4:32, it was scored by James Bernus and assisted by Sean Gilmour and Bill Muloin. Cody Bedu made a name for himself in the third period when he "picked" Bill Muloin intentionally, this lead Sean Gilmour to confront Cody, at which time Cody head butted, and punched Sean twice to start a scrap between the two teams. Sean stayed calm and did not sink to Red Deer's level. Cody was given a 2 minute minor for the butt end and a 2 minute minor for roughing. This was Cody's third penalty of the game and he was ejected and sent to the dressing room for his actions. This all took place with only 3 minutes left to go in the game. At 42.9 seconds left to go in the game Jake Smellie received his third penalty of the game for holding. He was ejected from the game but was allowed to remain on the player's bench until the end of the game.
The Red Deer Rage had only 18 shots against the Manitoba Moose goalie Jon Derry, with no success to score against the Moose. The Manitoba Moose had 19 shots on the Red Deer Rage goalie, scoring two goals to win the game.
The gold medal game in 2009 was a final score of 1-0 for Red Deer, this year the Manitoba Moose came back with a vengence and defeated them 2-0 to knock Red Deer out of the gold medal game, and to make everything a little sweeter, the Red Deer Rage lost to the Calgary Scorpions in the bronze medal game this year, ending the tournement in last place/ 4th.
James Bernus was awarded the MVP for scoring the game winner against the Red Deer Rage.
GOLD MEDAL GAME: Manitoba Moose vs. Battle River Icehawks (Sunday April 18, 2010)
Going for gold, the Manitoba Moose have been here before, however this time they don't need to worry about Red Deer.
The Manitoba Moose faced off against Battle River Icehawks for the second time this tournement only this time there was much more on the line, GOLD.
Battle River Icehawks opened up the game with a interference penalty at 12:42 in the first period giving the Manitoba Moose a power play right from the get go. The Manitoba Moose were unable to score during the power play however only a few minutes later Sean Gilmour recovered a turn over and had a break away to the net, Sean lifted the puck and scored top shelf against the Battle River goaltender, time of the goal was 8:11.
Once again the second period was quiet except for a hooking call against Battle River at 10:49.
The third period was heating up as Battle River received a high sticking penalty at 12:42, during the power play Sean Gilmour fired a shot from the blue line beating the goalie for the second goal of the game. Only this goal was later disallowed by the linesmen because James Bernus was offside at the time of the goal. This would have been the only power play goal ofthe tournement. The Battle River Icehawks received a T-boning penalty at 11:11, giving the Manitoba Moose another chance on the power play. Sean Gilmour and the Manitoba Moose were unable to shake their dismay of the disallowed goal, until James Bernus redeemed himself by scoring the second goal of the game at 3:07, assisted by Darrin Luke and Sean Gilmour. James's goal secured the win and the GOLD for the Mantioba Moose in the 2010 Western Canadian Sledge Hockey Tournement.
Battle River Icehawks only had 11 shots on the Manitoba Moose goaltender Jon Derry, where the Manitoba Moose had 20 shots against the Icehawks.
Bill Muloin was awarded the MVP for the Gold Medal Game.
