Wheelchair Basketball sent a small but talented team to Western Canada to participate in a tournament; The team comprised of some of our sledge hockey players went undefeated capturing the championship; Led by the strong play of Bernard, Teo and Bethany this crew showcased their talent and demonstrated they will be something of a force come the Canada Winter games which will take place in a few years; Coach Jarrett who has been with the program for 6 years ensured this talented group of athletes was prepared and ready to take on all comers;On behalf of the sledge hockey community we congratulate you on your strong showing;
Sledge players Logan, Noel and Tristan took part in the first Lego Club for children and youth; we were excited to have 10 Lego builders join our group and look forward to the next session in late November; The Lego club is an excellent chance to be creative, meet new friends and try new and different Lego projects; If interested in joining our new club please contact Jaylene directly.
BUILD ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! On Saturday November 9th 2019 Issac V received a pleasant surprise from Peter Jordan and his fellow teammates; On this crisp early morning Issac arrived at the rink expecting to participate in a practice session with his fellow sledge hockey players only to find out he was the recipient of a brand new sledge (razor). He was totally caught off guard and was so excited to receive this gift; Issac has been playing sledge hockey since the age of 5 years old and has been using borrowed equipment; Issac at the age of 9 is becoming a top sledge hockey athlete in the Manitoba program. With his own Razor Issac will continue forward with his desire to play with the advanced team, then Provincial squad and who knows perhaps a para Olympian;
This is the second sledge Peter and his teammates have donated to a selected athlete and their kindness and support have meant a great deal to the athletes they have touched; This group of men have gone the extra mile and has not gone unnoticed; Gentleman on behalf of the Sledge Hockey Community THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! Alyssa and Corrine traveled east to participate with the women's national sledge hockey team; both players recorded an assist each and helped lead their team to victory over the Atlantic team sweeping their competition in the series; great job !!!!
If you are looking to support a program or organization that is making a difference in the lives of children, youth and young adults then please consider donating to the Sledge Hockey program; Our donate page is open and is now accepting any level of donation; In partnership with Society for Manitoban's with Disabilities Sledge Hockey has become the largest accessible sport in the Province of Manitoba. However, the chance to play other teams requires travel to other locations outside of the City of Winnipeg. Players, parents and relatives do their best to personally cover most costs however it can be difficult to meet all costs associated with travelling to other Provinces. Tax receipts will be provided to donations exceeding $20.00. So when considering where to put your donation please look at Sledge Hockey as a perfect destination. Currently the squads are looking at raising funds that can be used towards attending tournaments in London Ontario and Calgary Alberta as destinations for the 2019/2020 season.
Alyssa and Corrine two excellent Manitoba sledge hockey athletes became the first Manitoba sledge hockey players to make a Canadian National team; Both players made the Canadian Women's Sledge squad in September. Alyssa a young person who just picked up the sport a couple of years ago showcased her abilities and strength at the tryouts making it next to impossible to cut her from the squad. Corrine who has been involved in the SMD sledge hockey program for a number of years also used a strong showing and commitment to entrench herself on the team; On behalf of sledge players in Manitoba and all upcoming and future female athlete's congratulations on being selected.
Kristy McFee from Accessible Horseback Riding has connected with SMD to inform members of our community the program has spaces available for Spring sessions. Are you aware that students with disabilities are participating with their school groups during skating programs; Sledge equipment has made it possible to remove participation barriers for students who have a disability. Cameron M was the first student to use his sledge to access a phys ed credit at Dakota high school. Phys ed and Hockey coach Ray A thought outside the box and invited Cam to skate with the Dakota Blazers hockey team every practice; this earned Cam his phys ed credit. Fast forward to 2019 and numerous students are now taking part with their classmates during learn to skate programs throughout the city. No longer do students have to stay in the class room or watch from the sidelines while fellow students enjoy the benefits of ice skating/hockey; Through on ice workshops and equipment loans by SMD all students can participate in the joy of skating; One such person who is now enjoying the pleasures of skating with her classmates and the hockey academy is Natalia D from Kenora who skated with her grade 7 hockey academy and is now skating with her grade 8 hockey academy classmates. Natalia has progressed in the sport very nicely and is turning out to be an excellent player. Natalia joins the Manitoba Sledge Hammers when they travel to tournaments and is a leader on the squad; we are so proud of her as she continues to break down barriers and improve in the sport she is so passionate about. Pretty COOL NATALIA!!!!!!!!
