Corrine Wengi a current member of the Women's National sledge hockey team will be conducting ice sessions at U of M for players of all ages and abilities; these ice sessions are not part of the current ice programming operated by SMD or Sledge Hockey Manitoba. Therefore all players must have their own sledge, sticks and appropriate safety gear. These ice sessions will focus on skill development, fun and drills which will assist with improving an individual's game.
There will be a cost associated with this ice which will depend on the number of ice sessions booked. For further information please contact Corrine at # 204 510 6924 or cwengi@hotmail.com The 2019 Sledge to Physical Literacy Day Camp was a huge success; there were over 24 players of all ages who participated in the only accessible Sports day camp offered for children and youth with various abilities; the main focus is to learn sledge hockey, however the players get much, much more. Players experience baseball, w/c fencing, archery, swimming and other team building games. Players experience greater periods of independence and make friendships that will hopefully last a very long time. This year we tested the novice skaters on Monday and Friday; please read the following times; the starting point was ringette line to far blue line; In no particular order; Monday Friday Logan J 12.34 10.66 Aspen 12.35 11.75 Lucy 12.41 11.09 Henry 8.71 6.93 Rainey 9.31 8.28 Issac 7.75 8.88 Paul 10.72 8.81 Hayden (assist) 7.87 injured Tristin 17.60 23.28 Noel 10.69 9.97 Tucker 10.04 8.31 GianLuca 8.53 8.16 Evan 10.91 10.91 On behalf of the leadership of the SMD 2019 Sledge Hockey Summer Camp thank you for participating; The Manitoba SledgeHammers competed in the Hendrickson Foundation sledge hockey tournament in Blaine Minnesota; this team was constructed with players from Manitoba, Kenora and Langdon North Dakota; this team battled hard and was led by future all-stars, Alyssa White (currently on the Women's National team, Cooper Vint, Issac Vint, Paul Hamm, Logan Johnston, Elijah Armbruster, Natalia Dobbs, Evan Hesom and Tucker Olson; this team led by Kevin Hamm, and Les McCrae motiviated this squad all the way to the finals; the game plan to keep the highest scoring team off the score sheet was a miracle in the making; strong defensive performances by Alyssa and Cooper kept Wisconsin's leading scorer off the score sheet for a period and a half; it was great to watch the opposing coach squirm as he had to change his coaching tactics. in the end the Sledge Hammers who were exhausted fell 3-1 to the highest scoring team in the tournament. in our opinion the team was the champions;
This Monday a mix of Intermediate and Advanced players had the opportunity to play against the squadron 402 “City of Winnipeg”, of the 17 Wing, from the military group. The wanted to recognize the International Day of Person with Disabilities (December 3rd), but also put a big emphasis on fitness. They said this was an excellent chance for the squadron members to bond while being active. They collected 150 pounds of food for Winnipeg Harvest and raised money, which they donated to Sledge Hockey Manitoba. Everyone had a smile on their face during the entire game, so much positive energy, great crowed and a hard battled fun game! Sledge Hockey Manitoba want to thank 402 "City of Winnipeg" and everyone else for attending this great event!!! On Saturday November 17th at East End Arena Teo received a brand new Sledge (razor from Peter Jordan and his teammates); Teo was kept in the dark regarding this surprise and was overjoyed with the teams kindness;
Teo became the first sledge hockey player to receive a direct donation from a local community group; Teo used the new sledge on Sunday and loved the feel of his new piece of equipment; On behalf of Society for Manitobans with Disabilities sledge hockey program and the Roy family thank you for your kindness. Jordan Banman made the NEXGEN Team Canada! We are so proud, great work Jordan, keep it up!

--- The first annual SMD Summer Sledge Hockey Camp came to a end on August 26th with a new member ready to play in the fall. The summer camp focused on physical literacy and sledge hockey, while partnering with other sports, to provide the sledge hockey athletes with a week-long intensive camp. In total, 29 participants participated in the inaugural camp. Of course, you didn't need to be an experienced player to participate. Omar Al Ziab, 15, tried the sport of sledge hockey for the first time at the camp. Omar proved to be a natural athlete, reducing his lap time from 39 seconds to 22 seconds after a week of training. Omar will be joining our league for the 2016-17 season at the MTS Iceplex. For more, please visit the CBC article linked at the top. |
